How to write a rap hook (with real examples)
A rap hook is four short lines that carry the whole song: line 1 says who it is about, line 2 gives the joke or the twist, line 3 adds a picture, and line 4 lands the payoff and rhymes back. Keep each line to about 10 to 12 syllables and rhyme in pairs.

What a hook does
The hook is the part that repeats and the part people quote. In a personal rap it does even more: a 15-second video plays only the hook, so it has to carry the name, the occasion and the best joke on its own. Write the hook first, then the verse.
| Line | Job | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Who and what | Mango in the shades and he don’t care |
| 2 | The joke or twist | Knocked your cup off and he left it there |
| 3 | A picture | Gold chain, orange fur, sitting on the stool |
| 4 | The payoff | Cat on the mic and he’s way too cool |
Five real hooks, taken apart
Each of these is the hook of a sample video. Read them for where the name goes and which word lands the rhyme.
Pet hook. It opens on a crime, not the name, and saves "Biscuit on the mic" for the payoff. Rhymes: deep and sleep, chest and rest.
Sweet hook. One tease in line 2 (burnt toast), then thanks. "Hall of fame" is the title and the payoff.
Duet hook. Line 2 explains who is rapping, which a duet needs. Longer lines, so it sits on a fast trap beat.
Roast hook. Every tease is followed by love in the same line: "still the man who loves her most".

Rhyme and rhythm
- Rhyme in pairs: lines 1 and 2, lines 3 and 4. It is what the ear follows.
- Rhyme on the last word, and make it a strong one: a noun or a verb, not "the" or "it".
- Use easy rhyme families: -ay, -ight, -ow, -ee. Hard words make you twist the line.
- Keep lines to 10 to 12 syllables, under 60 characters. Long lines get rushed.
- Stress matters more than counts. Four strong beats a line sits on most hip-hop beats.
- Repeat one phrase if you can. "Biscuit on the mic", "Mango on the mic": a repeated phrase is a hook inside the hook.
Read the hook out loud over a beat at normal speed. Any line you trip on, cut a word.
Common hook mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| An intro line ("yo, check it out") | Start on the story; every line earns its place |
| The name only in the verse | Put it in the hook; short videos cut the verse |
| Four jokes, no payoff | Line 4 pays off: the wish, the title, the love |
| The same chant line twice | Every line moves on; song models can loop a chant |
| General lines ("she is so nice") | Specific facts ("packed every lunch") |
The chant one is a lesson from making the dog sample: a first line like "Biscuit on the beat, Biscuit on the beat" got repeated several times by the song model. A hook where every line says something new sings cleanly.
Four fill-in hooks by occasion
Swap the words in brackets for your own and read each line out loud. Change the rhyme word if your fact does not fit; the shape is what matters.
Weak hook, strong hook
| Weak | Strong | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Today is your birthday, hooray | Jen hit forty and she owns the floor | Name and a number up front |
| My dog is very cute | Biscuit stole the socks and he’s proud | A real habit, said as a boast |
| You are a great mom | Packed every lunch, never missed a game | Specific things she did |
| We will miss you at work | Who’s gonna fix the printer now | A joke the whole team knows |
Every strong line is something you could only say about this one person or pet. If a line would fit anyone, it is filler; swap it for a fact. The dog sample below is built that way: crimes first, the name as the payoff.
“Took your socks to the yard and he buried them deep”
“Ignores the mailman, then he barks in his sleep”
“Golden coat shining with a chain on his chest”See a hook become a video
Each frame below is captioned with the hook line sung at that moment. The words drive the mouth, so lines with open vowels and clear consonants look the best.
“Mango in the shades and he don't care”
“Knocked your cup off and he left it there”

Should I write the hook or the verse first?
The hook. It sets the topic and the rhyme, and short videos play only the hook.
Can AI write a rap hook?
